HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid) & Weight Loss
By Chris Mccall
Derived from the dried rind of a small edible pumpkin-like fruit found in Southeast Asia called the Malabar Tamarind (also known as the Brindall berry) which grows on the Garcinia Cambogia tree, hydroxycitric acid (or HCA) is a 100% natural, non-toxic, appetite suppressant which has the unusual effect of reducing the body's conversion of carbohydrates to fats. And yes, it can actually cause you to eat less without feeling hungry! Heralded as the first real alternative to amphetamine-based slimming pills, HCA has excited a lot of interest in both the clinical world and the weight loss industry due to the fact that it is non-addictive (which means that it does not leave the taker dependent), it does not lose its effectiveness over time, nor does it produce a negative effect when discontinued. Prolonged use of drugs such as amphetamines, which directly affect the central nervous system, can lead to dependency as the body can build up a dangerous tolerance to them, potentially leaving slimmers with greater problems than those they set out to resolve. The Malabar Tamarind, on the other hand, has proven itself to be non-toxic over centuries of safe use in South Asia, where the dried rind has been used as a flavouring condiment, especially in curries - another food which, with the help of HCA (and other supplements revealed in this book) need no longer be a dieting no-no! HCA's ability to help with weight loss has been traced by researchers to the inhibiting effect it has on the enzyme ATP-citrate lyase, which is necessary for glucose metabolism - the conversion of glucose to fat. High blood sugar levels cause the body to convert glucose to glycogen for storage in the liver and muscles. When these stores have no room left for any additional glycogen, the glucose is broken down and converted in a number of steps into fatty acids and cholesterol for storage elsewhere in the body. By temporarily inhibiting the enzyme responsible for converting glucose into fat, HCA prompts the liver to take the leftover glucose and synthesize additional amounts of glycogen for storage, thereby alerting the hypothalamus to signal a sense of 'fullness'. In other words, HCA effectively curbs the appetite by creating a sense of 'fullness', which in turn reduces food intake. The happy result of this process is... a loss of weight! Human studies show that HCA can help to reduce food consumption by around ten per cent. In one study, a number of obese people already on a low fat diet were given 250mg of HCA and 100mg of a Chromium supplement three times daily - others were given a placebo. Those taking the HCA and Chromium reported decreased appetites and fewer sweet cravings while still managing to lose an average 11lbs - compared to just 4lbs lost by those taking the placebos! As if its ability to safely suppress appetites isn't enough to send you running to your local health store, it appears there are additional health benefits to be had from taking HCA. It has been observed during research that HCA also inhibits fatty production, thereby reducing blood cholesterol levels. Quite a package from a small berry - wouldn't you agree? Now, let's take another perspective on the slimming problem. For, as satisfying as it is, we all know that losing our unwanted pounds is only half the battle. To be a real victor in the weight war, we have to find a way to lose weight permanently, which, as every failed slimmer knows, can be far more difficult than the actual fact of dieting itself. So let's take a look at what those clever scientists have come up with to help us break that all-too-familiar vicious circle that is aptly named 'yo-yo' dieting. The depressing 'yo-yo' diet cycle of weight loss followed by weight regain is partly due to the fact that when we diet our metabolic rate decreases. Why does it do this? Because when we diet, not every pound we lose is actually made up of fat. Some of it consists of muscle (lean tissue), which actually burns up more calories than fat, and a good proportion of water. Thus, the less lean tissue we have, the lower our metabolic rate. Indeed, scientific studies have proven that low-calorie diets are likely to result in as much as a 30 per cent loss of muscle tissue. And because muscle tissue burns calories (even when we sleep), every time we lose or reduce our total muscle tissue (even by as little as an ounce), we also reduce our metabolic rate - so the whole object of the exercise is defeated. Worryingly, evidence even shows that the amount of fat stored in the body can actually increase with each new 'yo-yo' diet cycle, because, though the pounds we initially lose consist of fat, muscle and water, for some peculiar reason the pounds we regain tend mainly to consist of fat. Of course, while the whole point of dieting is to reduce our overall size, none of us want to do that at the expense of losing our shape. In order to retain shape, we need muscle tissue. Even more alarming than the depressing scenario described above is the fact that losing lean tissue also presents a potential major health risk, as inevitably some of the tissue will come from your vital organs - including your kidneys and your heart! Thus, if you continually diet without maintaining your lean tissue you could be paving the way to heart disease. |
