Why Do We Gain Weights?
By Chris Mccall
Have you ever wondered why it is so very easy to gain weight, and why we have so much difficulty losing it? Quite simply, the answer to that question is that nature long ago programmed fat into our genes! For while our personalities are very much a product of the 20th century, our poor bodies are still operating under long-forgotten stone age rules, when food was an uncertain and unreliable commodity, and conserving fat an absolute necessity for survival. Sadly, the human body takes many, many centuries to adapt to changes in its environment. Even so, it's useful to understand why our stone age bodies still feel it necessary to store fat. Ironically, it was because of our body's ability to adjust and adapt to circumstances (albeit very slowly) that we developed an in-built tendency to accumulate fat stores. These stores not only layered us with protection when our caves did not have central heating, but they also provided us with a handy form of in-built back-up food when hunting was poor, winters were really wintry, and supermarkets were something that existed only in the far-off future. Having equipped a whole generation to survive cold and hunger, Mother Nature then turned her attention to protecting future generations by programming into the female of the species a predisposition to accumulate more fat than her mate, the male of the species. Why? To offer both a cushion of protection to the offspring she would ultimately carry and - just to be safe - to provide an extra store of emergency food for times of hardship when she would need to 'eat for two'. As time went by the natural laws of selection - the 'survival of the fittest' - ensured that females who carried the greatest and healthiest supplies of fat had by far the best chance of survival. Consequently, it was these women's genes that got passed down through the generations, leaving more women with a genetic disposition to accumulate more fat in specific areas (and we all know where they are!) than men. So, like it or not, any fat you carry is all part of your genetic plan, courtesy of your parents, your parents' parents, and so on. Other than taking such drastic and painful action as liposuction, there is absolutely nothing we can do to eradicate those hated fat cells. However, there is something we can do to prevent them from ruining our life, our figure and our self-esteem. For the good news is: science has now confirmed that, we can work at not adding to them, we can shrink them and, once shrunk, we can do a lot to encourage them to remain inactive. |
